2014 British Columbia and City of Vancouver Rose of Tralee
The Rose of Tralee International Festival is held annually in Tralee County Kerry Ireland receives its name from the love song “The Rose of Tralee”, by William Mulchinock, a 19th century merchant who fell in love with Mary O’Connor, his maid.
In 1959 the first Rose of Tralee Festival was held, allowing girls born in locally to compete.
By the early 1960’s the competition rules were revised allowing girls born throughout County Kerry to take part and in 1967 girls born throughout Ireland or outside of Ireland and of Irish parents were invited to partake.
Each year, the girl selected as “The Rose of Tralee, represents the Festival and her City of origin; travels worldwide on behalf of the festival, sharing her experiences and performing charity work.
Today, the Rose of Tralee Festival has centers worldwide in Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Europe, England, Scotland, the United States, Canada, and of course Ireland.
Canada currently has four centers, three in Eastern Canada and one in the West.
In 2014, the Ireland Canada Monument Society has reserved a place for the inclusion of the successful first ever City of Vancouver Rose who will represent the City of Vancouver and the Province of British Columbia Vancouver at the Rose of Tralee Festival in Ireland.
